Being a single mother of three darling daughters, I have had to learn to do a lot of things on my own. Along with being the primary bread winner for my family, THE support and care giver for my kids (with lots of help from Mama, Papa, and Auntie of course)… not having a man around.. I have also learned to become master of my own Grilling domain.
Now, as the grill mistress of the house, I do have to clarify that I am referring to GRILLING not BBQ. BBQ is an art form that requires skill and patience, the latter I just don’t have at this point. But here are a few grilling tips for the grill-phobic ladies (or otherwise grill challenged) out there.
1. Get to know your grill. – Take the time to get to know your grill. Every one has it’s own hot spots, cool spots, etc. Even with gas grills when it is relatively easy to adjust your grilling zones, there will still be those sweet spots. Learn how to light it and prep your coals. Gas is vastly easier than coal, but neither is so hard that you can’t do it. Check out “How to light a grill“.
2. Fear not the flame – When grilling, you don’t want your meat sitting in a firey inferno. But I have found that as the meat is close to cooked.. I actually like a little flame-age. I like to ensure a nice fire cooked flavor. But wait until the meat is pretty close to where you want it done, then allow it to have a touch of fire. I happen to have a sweet spot in the back of my grill that always flames up when some juicy meaty goodness hits it.
Keep a spray bottle with water in it close by for the unwanted flames. The more juicy and fatty your meat, the more likely you are going to have flares. Don’t fear them… conquer them.
3. Practice makes perfect – The web is FULL of fantastic grilling advice. Grab some steaks and go for it. It takes practice to get good at grilling, but before you know it… you will be fighting with hubby for control over the fire.
Summer grill season is one of my favorite times of year. Along with steaks, I have mastered grilling chicken, pork, fish, veggies, and even pizza! It is easy, tasty, and keeps the kitchen clean. What more could a woman want.
